Mission Statement

DeafACT, inc strives to unite the Deaf and hearing communities by encouraging awareness of each other's culture; we accomplish this goal through educational theater performed by children using American Sign Language.

History

DeafACT, inc was founded in August 2005 by six motivated people who saw a need: the Austin hearing community had minimal exposure to American Sign Language and Deaf culture. Through signed plays, Deaf children can express themselves artistically while sharing their culture and language with hearing volunteers and audiences. Our hearing and Deaf board members have worked together over the past few months--creating an effective organization, acquiring funding, and locating volunteers--to fulfill our mission.

Denver Officers

Sarah Goetz
Sara Goetz
Company Administrator
Sara came from the faraway land of Wisconsin to Denver, Colorado, in 2001. Now she is here to stay. Through her experience at the Rocky Mountain Deaf School, she became very passionate about working with elementary children who have multiple disabilities. Sara is currently studying to obtain her bachelors degree in Special Education. Her interests include fixing her house, learning how to snowboard, knitting/crochet, cooking for guests, and exploring new places. She is thrilled to be involved with theatre and looks forward to great success for DeafACT in Denver!
Rachella Ortiz
Rachella Ortiz
Volunteer Coordinator
Rachella is currently working full time at the Rocky Mountain Deaf School. She co-teaches Art classes there and works with special needs Deaf kids. She is also attending Metropolitan State College of Denver. Enthusiastically, she is majoring in Special Education for her Bachelors of Arts degree. She likes living life to the fullest, helping others realize and reach their true potential, camping in the beautiful Rocky Mountains, exploring mountain trails, candle-making, dancing, painting, and meditating. A favorite quote she has is, "May the love that you feel, be what you do, there are a hundred different ways - to kneel and kiss the ground" She loves this quote because it reflects that there are ways to co-exist peacefully with all religions and spiritualities. She eagerly looks forward to serving on the DeafACT Board. Rachella looks forward to building bridges within the community to ensure this organization becomes a successful one! To contact her you can reach her at rachella.ortiz@deafact.org.
